Julian Beckton commented on the blog post VLE data 5 months, 1 week ago
Thanks Raad (and other commenters) – I’m well aware of the limitations of the data set. (I just can’t resist playing with data!) In any case I suspect getting an accurate picture, especially one that reflects institutions that are using multiple VLE’s and those that aren’t using any specific product but combining various tools to [...]

Julian Beckton commented on the blog post VLE data 5 months, 2 weeks ago
That’s a fair point of course, and I do agree there’s a need for a deeper study, ideally running over a few years. I am thinking about an appropriate methodology for doing just such a study, that would take into account multiple VLE’s and indeed institutions that don’t use a VLE at all. Although I [...]

It shouldn’t be taken as a definitive proposal, just something that I’m thinking about. Anyway, I’ve been reading a fascinating book [...] -

Julian Beckton commented on the blog post Blackboard v Moodle (Part 2) 5 months, 3 weeks ago
Thanks for the comment, Nick As far as I know, no-one is looking seriously at any alternatives at the moment. If we do want to bring about an effective change, I think we should be looking now, and be designing a few pilot projects with some other systems. Come to think of it, that would [...]

Julian Beckton wrote a new blog post: Blackboard v Moodle (Part 2) 5 months, 3 weeks ago
A few weeks ago I posted a comparison of what have become the two leading VLEs in UK higher education, namely Blackboard and Moodle. I don’t want to get into arguments about which is “best” here because any system is only ever as good as its users. We have some excellent Blackboard sites across the [...]
